ESO Challenge Difficulty
Challenge Difficulty is a new way to experience Overland Content in ESO! This new system describes the available Overland Difficulty Options players can choose from and debuts with ESO Seasons in 2026!
How Challenge Difficulty Works
Challenge Difficulty introduces new Options of difficulty to Overland Content. Like this, players that enjoy a challenge when questing or exploring can choose the right option for them.
The system works in Overland and Overland-adjacent zones, like Delves, Public Dungeons and Story Instances. It might also expand in more areas of the game in the future. This system will not work in areas that already have difficulty balance. Those include Dungeons, Trials, the Infinite Archive and the Night Market.

What are the Challenge Difficulty Options in ESO
The system offers four Difficulty Options. Those increase the damage you take from enemies and reduce the damage you do to them. Every option offers increased Gold and XP as rewards. These are the four Difficulty options:
- Adventurer. The default experience that already exists in Overland content.
- Seasoned. Take 100% more damage from enemies and do 20% less damage. Earn 50% more Gold and 20% more XP.
- Master. Take 300% more damage from enemies and do 50% less damage. Earn 100% more Gold and 75% more XP.
- Vestige. Take 600% more damage from enemies and do 80% less damage. Earn 200% more Gold and 100% more XP.

You can change the difficulty from your Character Sheet. Enemies will now have a symbol in their nameplates, to inform you of your active difficulty. The goal is to have all players in the same instance, regardless of their chosen Challenge Difficulty. Additionally, more rewards might come in the future in the form of Golden Pursuits with Challenge Difficulty-specific pursuits and more.

Seasoned difficulty is not that much different from Adventurer. This is a good option for players that want to challenge themselves more without losing their mind. Master Difficulty is where things start getting harder. You will have to adjust your approach to combat if you wish to survive. World Bosses are deadlier than before and Public Dungeon enemies are also quite harder.
You will need to dodge, kite, block and follow better strategies to clear tough enemies in Master option. However this is the best Difficulty option if you wish to Grind XP and Farm Gold in Public Dungeons because of the extra Gold and XP you gain. The Vestige option is the hardest and will require good knowledge of your character, Build and ESO to survive. Normal enemies and Bosses are deadly in this mode.
