Sorcerer Class Mechanics Guide BG3

The Sorcerer is one of the pure Spellcaster Classes in Baldur’s Gate 3, along with the Wizard that has access to powerful Elemental based spells. A powerful but harder to master Class that can reward you with fun gameplay thanks to its unique gameplay. Sorcerer Builds in BG3 have limited Spell Slots they can use in combat and rely on their Charisma to deal significant damage. However, Sorcerers can manipulate their Spell Slots with their 2 unique Class actions:

  • Create Sorcery Points
  • Create Spell Slots

The Create Sorcery Points action consumes a spell slot of your choice and gives you Sorcery Points that you can then use to create a new Spell Slot with the Create Spell Slots action. Like this you can manipulate the Sorcery Points along with Spell Slots to always be able to cast your favorite Spells.

Additionally the Sorcerer Class also gains access to powerful Metamagic Passive options! Metamagic allows you to enhance and alter Spells of your choice so you can adjust your strategy in every fight. For example with the Metamagic: Twinned Spell passive, you can cast the same spell twice at the same time and deal damage to more enemies in the same turn. Metamagic costs Sorcery Points to use! The entire Sorcerer Gameplay in BG3 revolves around Sorcery Points which you earn when you level up.

Best Subclass for Sorcerer Frost Build in BG3

The Best Subclass for the Sorcerer Build in BG3 is the Draconic Bloodline! The Draconic Bloodline Subclass gives you access to the Draconic Resilience and Draconic Resilience: Hit Points features. Draconic Resilience makes your base Armor Class 13 when you are not wearing armor, while Draconic Resilience: Hit Points gives you an extra hit point every time you level up. This helps a lot with survivability since the Sorcerer is a fragile ranged Class in BG3! The Draconic Bloodline also gives you access to a Draconic Ancestor with unique effects. There are ten Draconic Ancestors you can pick from and each will boost your resistance but also damage with a specific Element! The Draconic Ancestors are:

  • Draconic Ancestry: Red(Fire) – bonus fire damage and resistance, Burning Hands Spell
  • Draconic Ancestry: Black(Acid) – bonus acid damage and resistance, Grease Spell
  • Draconic Ancestry: Blue(Lightning) – bonus lightning damage and resistance, Witch Bolt Spell
  • Draconic Ancestry: White(Cold) – bonus cold damage and resistance, Armour of Agathys Spell
  • Draconic Ancestry: Green(Poison) – bonus poison damage and resistance, Ray of Sickness Spell
  • Draconic Ancestry: Gold(Fire) – bonus fire damage and resistance, Disguise Self Spell
  • Draconic Ancestry: Silver(Cold) – bonus cold damage and resistance, Feather Fall Spell
  • Draconic Ancestry: Bronze(Lightning) – bonus lightning damage and resistance, Fog Cloud Spell
  • Draconic Ancestry: Copper(Acid) – bonus acid damage and resistance, Tasha’s Hideous Laughter Spell
  • Draconic Ancestry: Brass(Fire) – bonus fire damage and resistance, Sleep Spell

To maximize the potential of the Sorcerer Frost Build for Baldur’s Gate 3 the Draconic Ancestry: White(Cold) is the best option! At level 6, spells that deal Cold Damage are more powerful and you can become resistant to Cold damage. It also gives you access to the Armour of Agathys Spell. A powerful defensive spell that gives 5 temporary hit points and deals Cold damage to enemies hitting you with melee attacks! This spell refreshes after every Long Rest and you can cast it as a level 6 Spell, which means that you can get up to 30 extra Hitpoints! You can combine it with the Spellcrux Amulet later in the game so you can always get your Spell Slot back before every fight.

Sorcerer Build Gameplay Tips in BG3

The Sorcerer is a powerful Spellcaster that attacks from range. Try to position your Sorcerer as far away as possible from melee enemies and on high ground. Before every tough fight cast Armour of Agathys(highest Spell Slot available) on you and restore your Spell Slot with Spellcrux Amulet. Try to open the fight with Ice Storm over most of the enemies. This attack will kill weaker targets, deal massive damage to the rest but also create Ice on the ground. Most enemies caught inside this area will go prone when trying to cross it. Keep your range and attack with your stronger AOE spells when possible. Keep the rest of your party relatively close to you, so you can cast your AOEs without any fear of dealing damage or affecting your Companions.

Combine Ice Knife with Metamagic: Twinned Spell as often as possible to deal damage to multiple enemies at the same time. If you have a clear line or area in front of you cast Cone of Cold or Lightning Bolt for even great damage. Fireball is a great spell early in the game but you will want to save your Spell Slots later for Ice Knife or support spells to cast. Still it can offer assistance and finish off enemies. Chain Lightning and Disintegrate are devastating Spells but also expensive to use. Wait for the right time to maximize your attack with them. Finally do not hesitate to use Counterspell when the enemy is trying to cast a powerful spell against you!
