The Oathbreaker Paladin in BG3 relies on the power of Darkness to deal damage and can also control Undead.

Paladin Class Mechanics Guide BG3
The Paladin is the Class of Holy Knights that follow specific tenets to obey their Oath! Oaths are the Classโ Subclasses and give Paladins a purpose. Picking one of the available Oaths in Baldurโs Gate 3 will give you access to certain features but will also force you to follow their tenets. The available Paladin Oaths in BG3 are:
- Oath of the Ancients
- Oath of Devotion
- Oath of Vengeance
If you fail to follow the tenets of your chosen Oath you will become an Oathbreaker, which is the fourth Sub class of Paladin in Baldurโs Gate 3!
Paladins are flexible in character creation since you can use a mix of Melee and Spells to attack your enemies. This means that you can invest in various Abilities like Strength, Charisma, Dexterity and Constitution and still be efficient in combat. Paladins also gain access to Lay on Hands spells that can heal and cure you and your allies. As the Holy Knight template Class, a Paladin usually wears Heavy Armor and carries a Shield but it is possible to focus on more offensive setups with the use of Two Handed weapons. If your goal in Baldurโs Gate 3 is to create a Knight that can smite down opponents and use spells to support their party, then the Paladin is the best option for you.
This Oathbreaker Paladin Build is using my Oath of Vengeance Paladin Build as its base. This is a great Build to use if you wish to role play an evil Paladin(Dark Urge run!) or a Paladin that was forced to break their Oath but still use their Dark abilities to help others(Resist Dark Urge!) in Baldur’s Gate 3!
Best Subclass for Paladin Build in BG3
The Best Subclass for the Oathbreaker Paladin is Oathbreaker! However you cannot start the game as an Oathbreaker Paladin. You need to pick one of the three initial Oaths and break it. Pick any Oath and focus on breaking it as soon as possible, in order to become an Oathbreaker Paladin. This guide continues assuming that you have chosen the Oath of Vengeance, which gives you access to the following spells and actions:
- Level 1 – Inquisitorโs Might
- Level 3 – Abjure Enemy, Vow of Enmity, Bane, Hunterโs Mark

Now that you have chosen your Oath, it is time to break it and become an Oathbreaker Paladin in BG3! The easiest way to break your Oath is by killing Scratch! But since you will not be able to live with yourself after that you can just attack or kill(depending on the chosen Oath) any innocent person. For the Oath of Vengeance you can also break your Oath by letting Auntie Ethel live after your confrontation in her house or by assisting Sovereign Glut to overthrow Sovereign Spaw and steal his Myconid Colony in the Underdark(Act 1).

How to Become an Oathbreaker Paladin BG3
When you break your Oath, the Oathbreaker Paladin will appear, explain the situation and go to your camp. The Knight will wait for you there. Visit your Camp and talk to the Knight. He will explain what an Oathbreaker is and allow you to continue playing as one. Alternatively you can choose to restore your Oath if you broke it by accident. As an Oathbreaker you unlock different Spells and actions as you level up. Oath Spells are always prepared and ready to use!
- Level 1 – Spiteful Suffering(Deal Necrotic Damage per tun)
- Level 3 – Control Undead, Dreadful Aspect(fear), Hellish Rebuke reaction, Inflict Wounds spell
- Level 5 – Crown of Madness and Darkness Spells
- Level 7 – Aura of Hate(extra damage to melee weapon attacks for you and nearby fiends based on your Charisma modifier)
- Level 9 – Bestow Curse and Animate Dead Spells

Best Race for Paladin Build in Baldurโs Gate 3
The Best Race for the Oathbreaker Paladin Build in BG3 is the Gold Dwarf! The Gold Dwarf Race has the Dwarven Toughness passive, which increases your Hit Point Maximum by 1 and increases by 1 every time you gain a level. Another great Race for the Oathbreaker Paladin is the Half Orc. Half Orc is a nice option thanks to its Relentless Endurance feature, that grants one extra hit point when you reach 0, so you can avoid being Downed. Half Orcs also have the Darkvision and Savage Attacks features. Darkvision allows you to see in the dark while Savage Attacks deal an extra dice of weapon damage when you land a Critical hit with a melee weapon! At this level you gain access to Spiteful Suffering from your Oathbreaker Subclass. This action makes a target to take Necrotic damage every turn and Attack Rolls against them have Advantage.
Level 2 Best Options
At level 2 you gain access to Divine Smite that will define your Gameplay! You can also pick a Fighting Style and prepare your Spells! Divine Smite deals additional Radiant Damage to fiends and undead and is also available as a Reaction. There are four Fighting Styles you can choose from:

- Balduranโs Vitality: The helmet heals you 2 hit points at the beginning of every turn.
- Balduranโs Favour: You have a +1 bonus to Armour Class and Saving throws.
- Stun Immunity: You canโt be Stunned.
- Attackers canโt land Critical Hits on the wearer.

The Mantle of the Holy Warrior is a Very Rare Cloak that grants you the Crusaderโs Mantle Spell. You can use this Cloak and pick another Spell to prepare like this. You can buy the Cloak from Vicar Humbletoes in Stormshore Tabernacle, Act 3!
The Helldusk Armor is the best Armor option for Chest! A legendary Heavy Armor that you can loot from Raphael in House of Hope(Act 3). The Armor offers:
- Helldusk Armor: You are considered Proficient with this armor while wearing it.
- Infernal Retribution: When you succeed a Saving Throw, the caster receives Burning for 3 turns.
- Prime Aegis of Fire: You have resistance to Fire damage and cannot be Burned. You take 3 less damage from all sources.

Gauntlets of Hill Giant Strength is the best Armor for Gloves. Very Rare Armor that you can get in House of Hope and Sets the wearerโs Strength to 23. The enchantment has no effect if their Strength score is higher without it. It also grants Strength Saving Throws +1. The Helldusk Boots is a nice boots option that you can get by looting a gilded chest in Gortashโs room on the top floor of Wyrmโs Rock Fortress. With them you get:
- Steadfast: You cannot be forcibly moved by a foeโs spells or actions, and you ignore the effects of Difficult Terrain.
- Infernal Evasion: When you fail a Saving Throw, you may use your reaction to succeed instead.
- Hellcrawler Class Action
The Amulet of Greater Health is the Best Amulet for the Build, which you can get in the House of Hope and Sets the Wearerโs Constitution to 23. It also grants advantage on Constitution Saving Throws Checks.
Killerโs Sweatheart and Ring of Regeneration are finally the best ring options for the Paladin Vengeance Build in Baldurโs Gate 3! You can get the Killerโs Sweatheart ring by defeating yourself in the Self-Same Trial inside the Gauntlet of Shar(Act 2). - Adamantine Splint Armor is an excellent Heavy Armor that you can craft at the Adamantine Forge. It reduces incoming damage, sends enemies reeling and attackers cannot land Critical Hits on the wearer.
- Gloves of Power inflicts penalties to enemies hit and grants Sleight of Hand +1. You can loot it from ZaโKrug in front of the Grove in Act 1.
- Boots of Speed grant you a burst of speed and make it difficult for enemies to land attacks of opportunity. You can get them from Thulla in the Myconid Colony(Act 1).
- Surgeonโs Subjucation Amulet allows you to paralyze an enemy and you can get it from Malus Thorm at the House of Healing(Act 2).
- Ring of Mental Inhibition affects with Mental Fatigue foes for 2 turns when they fail a Saving Throw against one of your spells or actions and you can get it from a locked chest in the Ruined Battlefield, in Shadow Lands(Act 2).
- Ring of Protection grants +1 to Armor Class and Saving Throw and you can get it as a reward from Mol for stealing the Druidsโ Idol(Act 1).
