ESO Companion
A Companion in ESO is a useful NPC, that can follow you around and assist in combat! Companions were first introduced to ESO with the Blackwood Chapter and offer an alternative way of adventuring in Tamriel. Ever since, every new Year adds two Companions to the game. Getting a Companion is rather easy but you will have to own the Chapter or DLC that introduces them to The Elder Scrolls Online! Alternatively you can buy some of them from the Crown Store or get them for free with an ESO Plus Subscription.

How Do you Get a Companion in ESO?
To get a Companion in ESO you must first own the appropriate Chapter or DLC and complete a Companion focused Quest in the Chapter’s zone. Companion Quests are relatively easy and fast to complete. Their Quests will offer you info on the Companion’s background and set the tone of your interaction with them.
So in order to get Bastian Hallix and Mirri Elendis you must own the Blackwood Chapter and complete their quests in the Blackwood zone. To get Ember and Isobel you must own the High Isle Chapter and complete their quests in the High Isle and Amenos zone. To get Azandar Al-Cybiades and Sharp-As-Night you must own the Necrom Chapter and complete their quests in the Telvanni Peninsula or Apocrypha zones.
Tanlorin and Zerith-Var Companions are slightly different. You can buy these two new ESO Companions from the Crown Store or get them for free with an ESO Plus Subscription. You do not need to purchase a Chapter to gain access to those two.

How to Summon A Companion in ESO
You can summon your companions at any time from the Allies tab in the Collection menu. You can also assign them any role you wish in order to complement your play-style, by choosing the right skills and armor. Companions cannot follow you in Arenas(except the Infinite Archive) and PVP zones though. When participating in group content, companions will count as players and occupy a player slot. This can be helpful for a group that is unable to find enough players to complete a Dungeon or Trial.
Companions however cannot replace players in terms of efficiency and DPS, so it is better to use them for easier PVE content. Each Companion excels in a different role. If you wish to learn which Companion is the best for every role, you can read my ESO Best Companion Guide.
